IN THE STUDIO

My paintings usually begin with an idea or vision of where I want them to go, but they almost never make it to that place. As I begin to layer in paint or pastels, they take on a life of their own and start to reveal a different story.  I paint using an abstract realism and expressionistic style as that is how the story plays in my imagination. The process never disappoints me as I discover much more than just a face on a canvas.

“Snake Charmer,” photographed by my grandfather in 1923, inspired my painting of the same name.

Inspired by Family

For years, I’ve been immersed in the past—painting from the vintage photographs and stories passed down through my grandfather’s travels in 1923. These moments, frozen in time, have allowed me to step into history and connect with the lives of people I never met but feel deeply connected to.

Now, I feel a new pull—a fresh wave of inspiration. I’m shifting my focus to a closer generation, to those who’ve shaped the person I am today. My parents, siblings, friends, and countless others whose lives have impacted mine in meaningful ways.

Through this new chapter of my art, I’m telling personal stories—of love, laughter, and the messy beauty of human connection. Each brushstroke is an opportunity to reflect the faces, moments, and relationships that have made my life rich and unforgettable. It’s a celebration of the journey, the people, and the stories that continue to shape me.

Impressionistic Realism

I paint in oil and acrylic on canvas and wood panels, frequently using a palette knife to add layers and textures that give my work a sense of movement and dimension. Many of my paintings also incorporate mixed media such as collage, old maps, charcoal, pastel and old transcripts, providing additional depth and context to the story. Backgrounds are always abstract, and the clothing nonspecific, allowing each painting to feel timeless. While you might be able to tell someone’s gender, my goal isn’t high realism; I prefer an impressionistic realism that includes an intentional openness, inviting viewers to see not just a face, but a reflection of our shared humanity.

A Few Things About Me

I GAVE UP THE FITNESS WORLD FOR ART. After 35 years of teaching pilates and barre, I decided to pursue my passion for art full-time. MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE. They bring joy, laughter, and endless inspiration to everything I do. I’VE HAD A PACEMAKER SINCE I WAS 41, which has taught me to live fully and embrace each day, no matter the challenges.MY FAITH IS MY FOUNDATION and is what guides me, gives me strength, and helps me stay positive. I LOVE BEING OUTDOORS. Fresh air and a view of nature rejuvenates my spirit and makes me feel at peace. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY DOGS IN THE WORLD! They bring joy, comfort, and a bit of chaos that I wouldn’t trade for anything. CHIPS & SALSA ARE MY WEAKNESS (although salsa doesn't always have to accompany my chips.) I PLAY GUITAR but I always wish I spent more time practicing. I LOVE GOLF even though I'm still working on perfecting my swing. THE LOVE OF MY LIFE IS THE MAN I MARRIED WHEN I WAS JUST 21. We've been together through everything and he remains my biggest supporter and best friend.
